Dog Owners Warned To Be Equipped For Summer Dangers

11th July 2023

Walking the dog in summer might seem a safe thing to do, but there are many potential perils for your pooch.

For this reason, veterinary nurse Shauna Walsh has been widely quoted advising people to take a pet first aid kit with them when walking their furry friend at this time of year.

Ms Walsh said: “Every first aid kit should include bandages, cotton wool, self-adhesive tape, and dressings which will come in handy for cuts and scrapes and allow you to treat them effectively.”

She added that tweezers should be included in the kit to remove any ticks, which can cause Lyme disease, although most bites and stings can be treated with creams at home.

The comments come after a study by veterinary charity the PDSA revealed 80 per cent of dog owners do not have a pet first aid kit when they take their furry friend for a walk.

Ticks and other insects are far from the only threats to pets in summer, with the PDSA publishing a list in 2021. Other notable problems include hot pavements that can cause burns to paws and the risk of heat stroke.

If you want to make sure your pet is in good condition and maybe takes a break from the effects of very hot weather, some dog daycare in Chiswick can give them a big treat, with a pamper and check-up to make sure they feel in great shape.

Another potential summer threat to dog health comes from days out at the beach, The Sun reports.

It has carried a warning from dog expert Laura Playforth given to VetsNow that dogs playing on the beach may accidentally ingest sand, which can clog up their intestines.

Other threats posed by a trip to the seaside include toxic hazards like drinking sea water or eating dead fish, while some dogs will not be strong enough swimmers to go in the water safely.
