At Dogtown, we love grooming doodle mixes—and we know them inside and out. With two Cockapoos of our own (who proudly roll in mud no matter how perfect their trims!), we understand just how unique these dogs—and their coats—can be.

Doodles come in a variety of coat types, and each requires different levels of care. While lifestyle, diet, and neutering status can all affect coat quality, most doodles fall into one of four coat categories:

Doodle Coat Types

The Flat Coat

  • Similar to: Cocker Spaniel
  • Shedding: Low
  • Maintenance: Very low
  • Clipping: Not usually needed
  • A wash-and-go type coat—easy to maintain and great for busy owners.

The Straight Coat

  • Texture: Loose waves
  • Shedding: Low to medium
  • Maintenance: Medium
  • Clipping: Needed 3–4 times a year
  • Benefits from regular brushing and scheduled grooming to stay neat and healthy.

The Wavy Coat

  • Texture: Soft curls or ringlets (most common in Cockapoos)
  • Shedding: Non-shedding
  • Maintenance: High
  • Routine Needed:
    • Frequent brushing at home
    • Full Grooms (clip & style)
    • Alternating Bath, Brush & Tidy appointments to prevent matting
  • Without regular maintenance, this coat can easily mat—leading to shorter, less stylised clips.

The Poodle Coat

  • Texture: Tight corkscrew curls
  • Shedding: Non-shedding
  • Maintenance: Highest
  • Routine Needed:
    • Very frequent brushing at home
    • Routine Full Grooms
    • Alternating Bath, Brush & Tidy
  • A gorgeous coat when well cared for—but demands a regular schedule to keep your dog comfortable and stylish.

Choosing the Right Look

For dogs with busy families or active outdoor lifestyles, we often recommend a Short Lamb Cut—a tidy, low-maintenance trim that still looks fantastic and keeps your dog clean and comfortable between grooms.
